Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble .... maybe Macbeth should have consulted the Witch Head Nebula. A frighteningly shaped reflection nebula, this cosmic crone is about 800 light-years away though. Its malevolent visage seems to glare toward nearby bright star Rigel in Orion, just off the left edge of this frame. More formally known as IC 2118, the interstellar cloud of dust and gas is nearly 70 light-years across, its dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. In this composite portrait, the nebula's color is caused not only by the star's intense bluish light but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in planet Earth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. Free Download: 2019 APOD Calendar (v5)

Una nebulosa de reflexión con una forma aterradora, esta vieja bruja cósmica se encuentra a unos 800 años luz de distancia. Su semblante malvado parece fulminar hacia la brillante estrella Rigel en Orión, ubicada justo fuera del borde izquierdo de esta imagen. Conocida formalmente como IC 2118, esta nube interestelar de polvo y gas tiene casi 70 años luz de diámetro, y sus granos de polvo reflejan la luz de la estrella Rigel. En esta imagen compuesta, el color de la nebulosa se debe no solo a la intensa luz azul de la estrella, sino también porque los granos de polvo dispersan la luz azul con mayor eficiencia que la luz roja. El mismo proceso físico hace que el cielo terrestre durante el día aparezca azul, aunque los dispersores en la atmósfera de la Tierra son moléculas de nitrógeno y oxígeno.
