The Great Nebula in Orion is one of the most interesting of all astronomical nebulae known. Here fifteen pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope have been merged to show the great expanse and diverse nature of the nebula. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries. These nurseries contain hydrogen gas, hot young stars, proplyds, and stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Much of the filamentary structure visible in this image are actually shock waves - fronts where fast moving material encounters slow moving gas. Some shock waves are visible near one of the bright stars in the lower left of the picture. The Orion Nebula is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as is our Sun. It takes light about 1500 years to reach us from there.
La Gran Nebulosa de Orión es una de las nebulosas astronómicas más interesantes que se conocen. Aquí se han fusionado quince imágenes del Telescopio Espacial Hubble para mostrar la gran extensión y la naturaleza diversa de la nebulosa. Además de albergar un brillante cúmulo abierto de estrellas conocido como el Trapecio, la Nebulosa de Orión contiene numerosas guarderías estelares. Estas guarderías contienen gas de hidrógeno, estrellas jóvenes y calientes, proplides y chorros estelares que expulsan material a altas velocidades. Gran parte de la estructura filamentosa visible en esta imagen son en realidad ondas de choque: frentes donde el material en rápido movimiento se encuentra con gas en movimiento lento. Algunas ondas de choque son visibles cerca de una de las estrellas brillantes en la parte inferior izquierda de la imagen. La Nebulosa de Orión está ubicada en el mismo brazo espiral de nuestra Galaxia que nuestro Sol. La luz tarda aproximadamente 1500 años en llegarnos desde allí.
