It is the most famous star cluster on the sky. The Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades is one of the brightest and most easily visible open clusters on the sky. The Pleiades contains over 3000 stars, is about 400 light years away, and only 13 light years across. Quite evident in the above photograph is the blue reflection nebula that surrounds the bright cluster stars. Low mass, faint, brown dwarfs have recently been found in the Pleiades.
Es el cúmulo estelar más famoso del cielo. Las Pléyades pueden observarse a simple vista incluso desde zonas con alta contaminación lumínica. También conocidas como las Siete Hermanas y M45, las Pléyades constituyen uno de los cúmulos abiertos más brillantes y fácilmente visibles del cielo. El cúmulo contiene más de 3000 estrellas, se encuentra a unos 400 años luz de distancia y abarca apenas 13 años luz de diámetro. En la fotografía superior resulta claramente visible la nebulosa de reflexión azul que rodea a las estrellas más brillantes del cúmulo. Recientemente se han descubierto en las Pléyades enanas marrones de baja masa y escasa luminosidad.
