Did you ever feel like a black cloud was following you around? Well don't feel bad - this even happened to the bright young stars of the open cluster NGC 6520. On the left are the cluster's bright blue stars. They formed only millions of years ago - much more recently than our ancient Sun which formed billions of years ago. On the right is an absorption nebula from which the stars might have formed. This nebula contains much opaque dust which blocks visible light from the many stars that would have been seen in the background. The study of open clusters is valuable for many reasons which include the understanding star formation and the calibration of the distance scale of our universe. ¿Alguna vez has sentido que una nube negra te seguía por todas partes? Pues no te preocupes, esto le ocurrió incluso a las brillantes y jóvenes estrellas del cúmulo abierto NGC 6520. A la izquierda se encuentran las brillantes estrellas azules del cúmulo. Se formaron hace apenas millones de años, mucho más recientemente que nuestro antiguo Sol, que se formó hace miles de millones de años. A la derecha se observa una nebulosa de absorción a partir de la cual podrían haberse formado las estrellas. Esta nebulosa contiene abundante polvo opaco que bloquea la luz visible de las numerosas estrellas que de otro modo serían visibles en el fondo. El estudio de los cúmulos abiertos es valioso por muchas razones, entre ellas la comprensión de la formación estelar y la calibración de la escala de distancias de nuestro universo.
