It is the most famous star cluster on the sky. The Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades is one of the brightest and closest open clusters. The Pleiades contains over 3000 stars, is about 400 light years away, and only 13 light years across. Quite evident in the above photograph are the blue reflection nebulae that surround the bright cluster stars. Low mass, faint, brown dwarfs have recently been found in the Pleiades.
Es el cúmulo estelar más famoso del cielo. Las Pléyades pueden observarse a simple vista incluso desde zonas con una intensa contaminación lumínica. También conocidas como las Siete Hermanas y M45, las Pléyades constituyen uno de los cúmulos abiertos más brillantes y cercanos. Este cúmulo contiene más de 3000 estrellas, se encuentra a aproximadamente 400 años luz de distancia y tiene apenas 13 años luz de diámetro. En la fotografía anterior resultan claramente visibles las nebulosas de reflexión azules que rodean a las estrellas más brillantes del cúmulo. Recientemente se han descubierto en las Pléyades enanas marrones de baja masa y escasa luminosidad.
