A robotic telescope with red sunglasses in Chile has been photographing the entire southern sky for years. The result, shown above, is the most complete sky map of the most common visible light emitted from the most abundant element in our Galaxy: hydrogen. A very specific red color emitted by warm ionized hydrogen was observed. Although spectacular emission nebulas glow brightly in this type of red light (H-alpha), a diffuse amount of warm hydrogen is spread throughout our Galaxy and its glow nicely indicates not only where darker hydrogen and other gasses may be located, but also the sometimes- complex history of interstellar gas. Gas tracking the plane of our Galaxy runs across the center, and huge gas clouds, some of which are the expanding shells of long dead stars, are also visible. The above map was derived from the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA) and shows that our entire Galaxy is one big emission nebula, albeit at a quite faint level.
Un telescopio robótico con gafas de sol rojas en Chile ha estado fotografiando el cielo austral completo durante años. El resultado, mostrado arriba, es el mapa de cielo más completo de la luz visible más común emitida por el elemento más abundante en nuestra Galaxia: el hidrógeno. Se observó un color rojo muy específico emitido por hidrógeno ionizado cálido. Aunque las nebulosas de emisión espectaculares brillan intensamente en este tipo de luz roja (H-alfa), una cantidad difusa de hidrógeno cálido se distribuye por toda nuestra Galaxia y su brillo indica adecuadamente no solo dónde puede localizarse el hidrógeno más oscuro y otros gases, sino también la historia a veces compleja del gas interestelar. El gas que sigue el plano de nuestra Galaxia cruza el centro, y enormes nubes de gas, algunas de las cuales son las capas expansivas de estrellas hace mucho tiempo muertas, también son visibles. El mapa anterior fue derivado del Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA) y muestra que toda nuestra Galaxia es una gran nebulosa de emisión, aunque a un nivel bastante débil.
