Do you see the horse's head? What you are seeing is not the famous Horsehead nebula toward Orion but rather a fainter nebula that only takes on a familiar form with deeper imaging. The main part of the here imaged molecular cloud complex is a reflection nebula cataloged as IC 4592. Reflection nebulas are actually made up of very fine dust that normally appears dark but can look quite blue when reflecting the visible light of energetic nearby stars. In this case, the source of much of the reflected light is a star at the eye of the horse. That star is part of Nu Scorpii, one of the brighter star systems toward the constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius). ¿Ves la cabeza del caballo? Lo que estás viendo no es la famosa nebulosa del Caballito de Orión, sino una nebulosa más tenue que solo adquiere una forma familiar con imágenes más profundas. La parte principal de la compleja nube molecular aquí representada es una nebulosa de reflexión catalogada como IC 4592. Las nebulosas de reflexión están compuestas en realidad por polvo muy fino que normalmente aparece oscuro, pero puede verse bastante azul cuando refleja la luz visible de estrellas cercanas energéticas. En este caso, la fuente de gran parte de la luz reflejada es una estrella ubicada en el ojo del caballo. Esa estrella forma parte de Nu Scorpii, uno de los sistemas estelares más brillantes hacia la constelación del Escorpión (Scorpius). Una segunda nebulosa de reflexión, bautizada como IC 4601, es visible rodeando dos estrellas a la derecha del centro de la imagen.
