Can you find the comet? Somewhere through this web of satellite trails is Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS), a bright visitor passing through the inner Solar System. Now, the orbiting satellites themselves only appear as streaks because of the long camera exposure, over 10 minutes in this case. On the contrary, to the eye, satellites appear as points that drift slowly across the night sky and shine by reflecting sunlight -- primarily just after sunset and before sunrise. The featured image was taken just before sunrise two weeks ago from Bavaria, Germany. Presently, Comet R3 PanSTARRS is hard to see for even another reason -- because it is so (angularly) close to the Sun. As the comet rounds the Sun, it will be best seen in coming weeks from southern hemispheree skies, although then it will be heading out to interstellar space and fading. If you haven't yet found the comet, don't despair; please take a closer look just above the image center.
¿Puede encontrar el cometa? En algún lugar entre esta red de estelas de satélites se halla el Cometa C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS), un brillante visitante que atraviesa el Sistema Solar interior. Los satélites en órbita aparecen como trazos debido a la larga exposición de la cámara —más de 10 minutos en este caso—. Por el contrario, a simple vista los satélites se perciben como puntos que se desplazan lentamente por el cielo nocturno y brillan al reflejar la luz solar, principalmente justo después del ocaso y antes del amanecer. La imagen destacada fue tomada justo antes del amanecer hace dos semanas desde Baviera, Alemania. En la actualidad, el Cometa R3 PanSTARRS es difícil de observar por otra razón adicional: su gran proximidad angular al Sol. A medida que el cometa rodea al Sol, podrá verse mejor en las próximas semanas desde los cielos del hemisferio sur, aunque para entonces se alejará hacia el espacio interestelar y su brillo irá disminuyendo. Si aún no ha encontrado el cometa, no se desanime; observe con más detenimiento justo por encima del centro de la imagen.
