The Whirlpool Galaxy is a classic spiral galaxy. At only 23 million light years distant and fully 65 thousand light years across, M51, also known as NGC 5194, is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies on the sky. The smaller galaxy appearing here below and to the left is well behind M51, as can be inferred by the dust in a foreground spiral arm blocking light from this smaller galaxy. The Whirlpool, pictured above, is visible with binoculars in the constellation of Canes Venaciti. M51 is a spiral galaxy of type Sc and is the dominant member of a whole group of galaxies. Astronomers speculate that M51's spiral structure is primarily due to its gravitational interaction with this smaller galaxy.
La Galaxia del Remolino es una galaxia espiral clásica. A tan solo 23 millones de años luz de distancia y con una extensión de 65 mil años luz, M51, también conocida como NGC 5194, es una de las galaxias más brillantes y espectaculares del cielo. La galaxia más pequeña que aparece en la imagen, en la parte inferior izquierda, se encuentra muy por detrás de M51, como puede inferirse por el polvo de un brazo espiral en primer plano que bloquea la luz proveniente de esta galaxia menor. El Remolino, mostrado en la imagen, es visible con binoculares en la constelación de Canes Venatici. M51 es una galaxia espiral de tipo Sc y es el miembro dominante de todo un grupo de galaxias. Los astrónomos especulan que la estructura espiral de M51 se debe principalmente a su interacción gravitacional con esta galaxia más pequeña.
