Broken metal and scorched Mars make the impact site of Opportunity's heat shield one of the more interesting sites inspected by the rolling robot. Visible on the image left is the conical outer hull of the shattered heat shield expelled by Opportunity as it plummeted toward Mars last year. Scrolling right will show not only another section of the heat shield but the impact site itself. The site is of interest partly because its creation was relatively well understood. The impact splattered subsurface light red dirt, while a darker material appears to track toward the large debris. Behind the impromptu space exhibit lies a vast alien landscape of featureless plains and rust-tinted sky.
Metal roto y Marte chamuscado hacen que el sitio de impacto del escudo térmico de Opportunity sea uno de los lugares más interesantes inspeccionados por el robot móvil. Visible a la izquierda de la imagen se encuentra el casco exterior cónico del escudo térmico destrozado expulsado por Opportunity mientras caía hacia Marte el año anterior. Al desplazarse hacia la derecha se puede ver no solo otra sección del escudo térmico sino el sitio del impacto mismo. El sitio es de interés en parte porque su creación fue relativamente bien comprendida. El impacto dispersó tierra roja clara del subsuelo, mientras que un material más oscuro parece extenderse hacia los grandes escombros. Detrás de esta improvisada exhibición espacial se extiende un vasto paisaje alienígena de llanuras sin características y un cielo teñido de herrumbre.
