This complex of beautiful, dusty reflection nebulae lies in the constellation Scorpius along the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy. Its overall outline suggests a horsehead in profile, though it covers a much larger region than the better known Horsehead Nebula of Orion. The star near the eye of the horse and the center of the 5 degree wide field, is embedded in blue reflection nebula IC 4592 over 400 light-years away. At that distance, the view spans nearly 40 light-years. The horse's gaze seems fixed on Beta Scorpii, also named Graffias, the bright star at the lower left. Toward the top right, near the horse's ear, is another striking bluish reflection nebula, IC 4601. The characteristic blue hue of reflection nebulae is caused by the tendency of interstellar dust to more strongly scatter blue starlight.
Este complejo de hermosas nebulosas de reflexión polvorientas se encuentra en la constelación de Escorpión a lo largo del plano de nuestra Vía Láctea. Su contorno general sugiere un caballo de perfil, aunque cubre una región mucho más grande que la nebulosa Caballito de Burro más conocida en Orión. La estrella cerca del ojo del caballo y en el centro del campo de 5 grados de ancho, está incrustada en la nebulosa de reflexión azul IC 4592, a más de 400 años luz de distancia. A esa distancia, la vista abarca casi 40 años luz. La mirada del caballo parece fija en Beta Scorpii, también llamada Graffias, la estrella brillante en la esquina inferior izquierda. Cerca de la parte superior derecha, cerca de la oreja del caballo, se encuentra otra nebulosa de reflexión azul llamativa, IC 4601. El color azul característico de las nebulosas de reflexión es causado por la tendencia del polvo interestelar a dispersar más fuertemente la luz estelar azul.
