Do any shapes seem to jump out at you from this interstellar field of stars and dust? The jeweled expanse, filled with faint, starlight-reflecting clouds, drifts through the night in the royal constellation of Cepheus. Far from your own neighborhood on planet Earth, these ghostly apparitions lurk along the plane of the Milky Way at the edge of the Cepheus Flare molecular cloud complex some 1,200 light-years away. Over two light-years across and brighter than the other spooky chimeras, VdB 141 or Sh2-136 is also known as the Ghost Nebula, seen at toward the bottom of the featured image. Within the reflection nebula are the telltale signs of dense cores collapsing in the early stages of star formation.

Esta expansión de joyas, llena de nubes tenues que reflejan la luz de las estrellas, flota en la noche dentro de la constelación real de Cefeo. Lejos de tu vecindario en la Tierra, estas apariciones fantasmales se encuentran a lo largo del plano de la Vía Láctea, en el borde del complejo de nubes moleculares de la Flama de Cefeo, a unos 1200 años luz de distancia. Con más de dos años luz de ancho y más brillante que otras criaturas espeluznantes, VdB 141 o Sh2-136 también se conoce como la Nebulosa Fantasma, visible hacia la parte inferior de la imagen destacada. Dentro de la nebulosa de reflexión se encuentran las señales características de núcleos densos colapsando en las primeras etapas de la formación estelar.
