This famous cosmic dust cloud was imaged in infrared light by the European Space Agency's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) satellite. The false-color picture shows the bright infrared emission from dust and molecular gas in part of the Orion star forming region surrounding the Horsehead Nebula. In visible light, the horsehead-shaped dust cloud looks dark against a background of bright glowing gas. But in this image, the interstellar infrared glow engulfs much of the horse's head. Just above and to the right of center, only the top remains crowned by a bright, newborn star. The very bright object at the lower left is the reflection nebula NGC 2023, a dense concentration of interstellar gas and dust which is also associated with newly formed stars.
Esta famosa nube de polvo cósmico fue captada en luz infrarroja por el satélite Observatorio Espacial Infrarrojo (ISO, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Agencia Espacial Europea. La imagen en falso color muestra la intensa emisión infrarroja proveniente del polvo y el gas molecular en una parte de la región de formación estelar de Orión que rodea la Nebulosa Cabeza de Caballo. En luz visible, la nube de polvo con forma de cabeza de caballo aparece oscura sobre un fondo de gas luminoso brillante. Sin embargo, en esta imagen, el resplandor infrarrojo interestelar envuelve gran parte de la cabeza del caballo. Justo por encima y a la derecha del centro, solo la parte superior permanece visible, coronada por una brillante estrella recién nacida. El objeto muy brillante en la parte inferior izquierda es la nebulosa de reflexión NGC 2023, una densa concentración de gas y polvo interestelar que también está asociada con estrellas de reciente formación.
