Swirls of gas and dust enrich this little observed starfield toward the constellation of Sagittarius. Just to the side of the more often photographed Lagoon Nebula (M8) and the Trifid Nebula (M20) lies this busy patch of sky dubbed IC 4678. Prominent in the above image are large emission nebulas of red glowing gas highlighted by unusually bright red filaments. On the left, a band of thin dust preferentially reflects the blue light of a bright star creating a small reflection nebula. On the right and across the bottom, swaths of thicker dust appear as dark absorption nebulas, blocking the light from stars farther in the distance. IC 4678 spans about 25 light years and lies about 5,000 light years distant.
Remolinos de gas y polvo enriquecen este campo estelar poco observado hacia la constelación de Sagitario. Situado justo al lado de la más frecuentemente fotografiada Nebulosa de la Laguna (M8) y la Nebulosa Trífida (M20), se encuentra este activo parche de cielo denominado IC 4678. Destacadas en la imagen anterior se encuentran grandes nebulosas de emisión con gas incandescente rojo, resaltadas por filamentos rojo inusualmente brillantes. A la izquierda, una banda de polvo delgado refleja preferentemente la luz azul de una estrella brillante, creando una pequeña nebulosa de reflexión. A la derecha y en la parte inferior, extensiones de polvo más espeso aparecen como nebulosas de absorción oscuras, bloqueando la luz de estrellas más lejanas. IC 4678 abarca aproximadamente 25 años luz y se encuentra a unos 5000 años luz de distancia.
