It's the dim star, not the bright one, near the center of NGC 3132 that created this odd but beautiful planetary nebula. Nicknamed the Eight-Burst Nebula and the Southern Ring Nebula, the glowing gas originated in the outer layers of a star like our Sun. In this reprocessed color picture, the hot purplish pool of light seen surrounding this binary system is energized by the hot surface of the faint star. Although photographed to explore unusual symmetries, it's the asymmetries that help make this planetary nebula so intriguing. Neither the unusual shape of the surrounding cooler shell nor the structure and placements of the cool filamentary dust lanes running across NGC 3132 are well understood. Es la estrella tenue, no la brillante, cercana al centro de NGC 3132 la que creó esta nebulosa planetaria extraña pero bella. Apodada también Nebulosa de Ocho Rayos y Nebulosa Anillo del Sur, el gas brillante provino de las capas externas de una estrella similar al Sol. En esta imagen reprocesada en colores, la gran masa de luz púrpura que rodea este sistema binario está energizada por la superficie caliente de la estrella tenue. Aunque fue fotografiada para explorar simetrías inusuales, son las asimetrías las que ayudan a hacer esta nebulosa planetaria tan intrigante. Ni la forma inusual de la capa más fría que la rodea, ni la estructura y ubicación de las frías zonas de polvo filamentoso que atraviesan NGC 3132 son bien comprendidas.
