As planet Earth approached the plane of the Comet PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) orbit on May 23rd, comet watchers were treated to this view of its magnificent anti-tail. The long, narrow anti-tail stretches to the right across this frame for nearly 4 degrees or about 8 times the angular size of the full Moon. Dust forming the anti-tail trails along the comet's orbit as it leaves the inner solar system behind. An almost edge-on perspective from near the outbound comet's orbital plane enhances the view of the anti-tail and makes it seem to point in the sunward direction, only apparently contrary to the behavior of comet dust tails pushed outward by the pressure of sunlight. Sweeping far north in planet Earth's skies, the comet is up all night for most of the northern hemisphere, but now bright moonlight interferes with its visibility. Cuando la Tierra se acercó al plano de la órbita del cometa PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) el 23 de mayo, los observadores de cometas tuvieron la oportunidad de ver esta magnífica anti-cola. La larga y estrecha anti-cola se extiende hacia la derecha en esta imagen durante casi 4 grados, o aproximadamente 8 veces el tamaño angular de la Luna llena. El polvo que forma la anti-cola se extiende a lo largo de la órbita del cometa mientras se aleja del sistema solar interior. Una perspectiva casi perpendicular desde el plano orbital del cometa en su trayectoria de salida mejora la visión de la anti-cola y la hace parecer apuntar hacia la dirección del Sol, aparentemente contraria al comportamiento de las colas de polvo de los cometas empujadas hacia afuera por la presión de la luz solar. Al moverse muy al norte en los cielos terrestres, el cometa está visible durante toda la noche para la mayor parte del hemisferio norte, pero ahora la brillante luz de la luna interfiere con su visibilidad. La anti-cola de PanSTARRS es una de las más largas desde la aparición del cometa Arend-Roland en 1957.
