Milky Way with Airglow Australis Vía Láctea con brillo atmosférico austral

After sunset on September 1, an exceptionally intense, reddish airglow flooded this Chilean winter night skyscape. Above a sea of clouds and flanking the celestial Milky Way, the airglow seems to ripple and flow across the northern horizon in atmospheric waves. Originating at an altitude similar to aurorae, the luminous airglow is instead due to chemiluminescence, the production of light through chemical excitation. Commonly captured with a greenish tinge by sensitive digital cameras, this reddish airglow emission is from OH molecules and oxygen atoms at extremely low densities and has often been present in southern hemisphere nights during the last few years. On this night it was visible to the eye, but seen without color. Antares and the central Milky Way lie near the top, with bright star Arcturus at left. Straddling the Milky Way close to the horizon are Vega, Deneb, and Altair, known in northern nights as the stars of the Summer Triangle.

Después del atardecer del 1 de septiembre, un brillo atmosférico austral de intensidad excepcional y tonalidad rojiza inundó este cielo chileno de noche invernal. Sobre un mar de nubes y flanqueando la Vía Láctea celeste, el brillo atmosférico parece ondularse y fluir a lo largo del horizonte norte en ondas atmosféricas. Originándose a una altitud similar a la de las auroras, el brillo luminoso no se debe a las auroras, sino a la quimiluminiscencia, la producción de luz mediante la excitación química. Comúnmente capturado con un tono verde por cámaras digitales sensibles, este brillo rojizo emite luz proveniente de moléculas de OH y átomos de oxígeno a densidades extremadamente bajas y ha estado presente con frecuencia en las noches del hemisferio sur durante los últimos años. Esa noche fue visible a simple vista, pero sin color. Antares y la Vía Láctea central se encuentran cerca de la parte superior, con la brillante estrella Arcturus a la izquierda. Cruzando la Vía Láctea cerca del horizonte se encuentran Vega, Deneb y Altair, conocidas en las noches del norte como las estrellas del Triángulo de Verano.
