rly one moonlit evening car lights left a wandering trail along the road to the Chilean Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Setting stars left the wandering trails in the sky. The serene view toward the mountainous horizon was captured in a telephoto timelapse image and video taken from nearby Cerro Pachon, home to Gemini South. Afforded by the mountaintop vantage point, the clear, long sight-line passes through layers of atmosphere. The changing atmospheric refraction shifts and distorts the otherwise steady apparent paths of the stars as they set. That effect also causes the distorted appearance of Sun and Moon as they rise or set near a distant horizon.
Una noche soleada con luz de luna, las luces de los automóviles dejaron un rastro errante a lo largo de la carretera que lleva al Observatorio Interamericano de Cerro Tololo en Chile. Las estrellas que se ponen también dejan rastros errantes en el cielo. La tranquila vista hacia el horizonte montañoso fue capturada en una imagen y video de timelapse con teleobjetivo tomados desde el cercano Cerro Pachón, hogar del Telescopio Gemini Sur. Gracias a la elevada posición en la cima, la línea de visión clara y prolongada atraviesa capas de la atmósfera. La refracción atmosférica cambia y distorsiona los caminos aparentemente estables de las estrellas mientras se ponen. Ese mismo efecto también causa la apariencia distorsionada del Sol y la Luna cuando se levantan o ponen cerca de un horizonte distante.
