Vivid and lustrous, wafting iridescent waves of color wash across this skyscape from northern Sweden. Known as nacreous clouds or mother-of-pearl clouds, they are rare. But their unforgettable appearance was captured in this snapshot on January 12 with the Sun just below the local horizon. A type of polar stratospheric cloud, they form when unusually cold temperatures in the usually cloudless lower stratosphere form ice crystals. Still sunlit at altitudes of around 15 to 25 kilometers, the clouds diffract the sunlight even when the Sun itself is hidden from direct view.
Vívidas y lustrosas, ondas iridiscentes de color se extienden por este paisaje celeste del norte de Suecia. Conocidas como nubes nacaradas o nubes de nácar, son muy poco frecuentes. Sin embargo, su inconfundible apariencia quedó capturada en esta fotografía el 12 de enero, con el Sol justo por debajo del horizonte local. Un tipo de nube estratosférica polar, se forman cuando temperaturas inusualmente frías en la baja estratosfera —generalmente despejada— dan lugar a la formación de cristales de hielo. Aún iluminadas por el Sol a altitudes de entre 15 y 25 kilómetros, estas nubes difractan la luz solar incluso cuando el Sol mismo está oculto a la vista directa.
