This vintage 60-kopek stamp celebrates a dramatic achievement. On October 7th, forty years ago (7/X/1959), the Soviet interplanetary station which has come to be called "Luna 3" successfully photographed the far side of the moon giving denizens of planet Earth their first ever view of this hidden hemisphere. Lacking the digital image technology familiar now, Luna 3 took the pictures on 35mm film which was automatically developed on board. The pictures were then scanned and the signal transmitted to Earth days later in what was perhaps also the first interplanetary fax. In all, seventeen pictures were received providing enough coverage and resolution to construct a far side map and identify a few major features. Depicted on the stamp are regions dubbed the Sea of Moscow, the Soviet Mountains, the Bay of Astronauts, and the Sea of Dreams.
Este sello vintage de 60 kopeks conmemora un logro extraordinario. El 7 de octubre de hace cuarenta años (7/X/1959), la estación interplanetaria soviética conocida como "Luna 3" fotografió con éxito la cara oculta de la Luna, ofreciendo a los habitantes del planeta Tierra su primera visión de este hemisferio desconocido. Sin contar con la tecnología de imagen digital que hoy nos resulta familiar, Luna 3 tomó las fotografías en película de 35 mm, que fue revelada automáticamente a bordo. Las imágenes fueron luego escaneadas y la señal transmitida a la Tierra días después en lo que quizás fue también el primer fax interplanetario. En total, se recibieron diecisiete imágenes, que proporcionaron cobertura y resolución suficientes para elaborar un mapa de la cara oculta e identificar algunos accidentes geográficos principales. En el sello aparecen representadas regiones denominadas el Mar de Moscú, las Montañas Soviéticas, la Bahía de los Astronautas y el Mar de los Sueños.
