Although a new ozone hole has formed again this year over the South Pole, this time it is a little bit smaller than the year before. Ozone is important because it shields us from damaging ultraviolet sunlight. Ozone is vulnerable, though, to CFCs and halons being released into the atmosphere. International efforts to reduce the use of these damaging chemicals really are having a positive effect on their atmospheric abundance. This year, however, the slightly reduced size of the ozone hole is mostly due to relatively mild weather, which reduces the efficiency of ozone depletion. Aunque este año se ha vuelto a formar un nuevo agujero de ozono sobre el Polo Sur, en esta ocasión es ligeramente más pequeño que el del año anterior. El ozono es importante porque nos protege de la dañina radiación ultravioleta solar. Sin embargo, el ozono es vulnerable a los CFC (clorofluorocarburos) y halones que se liberan a la atmósfera. Los esfuerzos internacionales para reducir el uso de estos químicos nocivos están teniendo realmente un efecto positivo en su concentración atmosférica. No obstante, este año la ligera reducción del tamaño del agujero de ozono se debe principalmente a condiciones meteorológicas relativamente suaves, que disminuyen la eficiencia del proceso de destrucción del ozono.
